Vol. 7 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LONGFORD COMPENSATION AWARD.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that Mr. Luke Farrell, merchant, Ballyleague, Lanesboro', Co. Longford, was awarded compensation by Co. Court Judge Wakeley at Roscommon Quarter Sessions on the 9th February, 1921, amounting to £1,030 with interest until the date of payment, for the looting and wrecking of his premises by British Forces in November, 1920; whether this claim, with the exception of £80 which he received on account, is still unpaid, and whether, seeing this claim is so long outstanding, he will have it immediately attended to.

The decree referred to by the Deputy cannot be traced in this Ministry. The Compensation (Ireland) Commission have, however, made an award of £85 with interest and costs in favour of the person named. This award was in substitution for a decree dated 7th February, 1921, for £180 and costs granted by County Court Judge Wakeley in respect of damage to Mr. Farrell's premises on 20th November, 1920, and was duly discharged in full early in July, 1923. I think the mistake occurred owing to the fact that Mr. Farrell claimed £1,000. He was awarded £150 by the County Court Judge, and that was reduced by the Compensation Commission to £80.
