Vol. 7 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CARLOW COMPENSATION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Defence if on the 2nd of July, 1922, an Albion motor lorry, the property of Mr. Joseph Parker, Brown Street, Carlow, was commandeered by a party of National soldiers under the command of Commandant Stack; if said lorry was detained for three months, and was delivered to the owner in a damaged condition; if a claim for compensation amounting to £150 has been lodged in respect of the damage; and if he will say if payment on foot of this claim will be made without further delay.

Mr. Parker's lorry was taken by troops on the date mentioned to Carlow Barracks to prevent its use by Irregulars, who were then active in that area. It was returned to its owner on the 22nd August, 1922, in good condition. During the period of its detention, motor transport in the district was practically impossible. In the circumstances, no claim for compensation can be entertained, and Mr. Parker's solicitor was so informed on the 19th April, 1923.

Will Mr. Parker be allowed an opportunity of proving the damage that he alleges was caused to this vehicle?

I take it that he has had that opportunity already. It is twelve months since the lorry was returned, but if he has any proofs to urge in connection with the case, I would be prepared to receive them.
