Vol. 7 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CO. CAVAN TURBARY RIGHTS.

(for Pádraig Baxter) asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture whether he is aware that in various parts of Co. Cavan, where, previous to the passing of the Land Act, tenants held bog on the same estate as their land as an appurtenance to their holding at a nominal annual rental, whether he is aware that the landlord is, this season, letting the said bog by public auction, thereby depriving the tenants of their just and legal rights; whether the Land Commission will take any action in this matter, and, furthermore, pending the vesting of these estates (including bog) if he will state what is the present position of the tenants in regard to their plots of bog.

The Land Commission are not aware what is the property to which the Deputy refers. When dealing with estates under the Land Act, 1923, the Commissioners will inquire into the circumstances as regards turbary. If, as stated in the question, the tenants have a right to cut turf on the bogs referred to, they should take such steps as they may be legally advised to protect their interests, if they are being interfered with.
