Vol. 7 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TRAWLING IN DUNMANUS BAY.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he has received a report that the steam trawler G.7, "Lord Ashby," was found engaged in illegal trawling in Dunmanus Bay on April 22nd; whether, on the same date, the trawler M.8, "Oceanic," was also captured while engaged in illegal trawling, and, further, whether, on the same date, the trawler G.7.8.91, "Lord Allendale," was found trawling in Bantry Bay, the captain of this trawler refusing to give his name; whether prosecutions will be instituted in the cases at once, and if he will state what steps he proposes to take to stop the very large amount of illegal trawling being carried on in the above-mentioned waters.

The reports referred to have been received, and are being dealt with. Materials for prosecutions are being got together, and when complete will be handed to the Chief State Solicitor with a view to prosecutions being instituted.

It is hoped that the results of these and other prosecutions which are already under way may have a wholesome effect on the persons who engage in illegal trawling.

Are we to understand from that that a change has taken place since the Minister made a statement upon this matter before, and that prosecutions now will be instituted?

Yes, they are being instituted.
