Vol. 7 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - BLIND PENSION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that Margaret Driscoll, Butlersgift, Drimo-league, who has been in receipt of a blind pension for over three years, has now been deprived of same; whether he is aware that this woman has been practically blind for thirty-five years; and totally blind for four or five years; that she is now destitute, and whether her case will be re-opened with a view to restoring her pension.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, the Medical Inspector made a detailed examination of the claimant's eyesight on the 11th ultimo. His report showed that she has useful vision in one eye and that suitable glasses should further improve it. Her standard of sight debars her from the blind pension, and it is regretted that in the circumstances the pension cannot be restored or the decision reconsidered.

It appeared from the official papers in 1921 that Miss Driscoll was then supported by a brother, but I have no information at present on this point.

Perhaps the case could be met by application to the local home assistance officer.
