Vol. 7 No. 21

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - THE ARMY INQUIRY.

asked the President if he will state when does he anticipate being in a position to make a statement on the result of the Army Inquiry.

I hope to be in a position to make a statement on the re-assembling of the Dáil after the Whitsuntide Recess.

Arising out of that answer, I would like to ask if the President will take into consideration in dealing with this matter the fact that in the first place it is really necessary, in justice to the officers concerned, that it should be finally dealt with before the Dáil adjourns for the summer holidays; and in the second place, Deputies, for many reasons, may desire to ask for the publication of the evidence given before the Committee before they can consider that the matter has been really satisfactorily dealt with from their point of view.

I anticipate that the matter will be finally dealt with before the Summer Recess. As regards the second part of the question—the publication of the evidence—I have had some interim reports but I have not had time to read them; nor do I know the nature of the evidence submitted. I would not be in a position to answer that question without giving the matter very careful consideration.

I only ask the President to take into consideration the fact that the Deputies may wish to press for the publication of the evidence, and that if they did so the Dáil might easily have adjourned before the evidence was printed and circulated if that aspect of the matter was not kept in mind.

I will take a note of the point made by Deputy Mulcahy, and I hope to be able to deal with it very shortly after our reassembling after the Whitsunside Recess.
