Vol. 7 No. 31

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - A SOLDIER'S DISCHARGE.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that Sergeant John Dempsey, who is in charge of the Canteen, Naas Barracks, under Mr. Devlin, Army Contractor, applied for discharge from the Army on October 30th, 1922, and has not hitherto obtained it, and whether he will enquire into the matter and see that the money due from the date of his enlistment is paid over to this man.

The records of Mr. Dempsey's service in the Army appear to show that he was discharged on the 21st October, 1922, and that he was properly paid from the date of his enlistment on the 3rd February, 1922. I am informed that he has been employed in a civilian capacity by Mr. Devlin and remunerated at the rate of £2 a week and board since the end of October, 1922.

Perhaps the Minister is not aware that it is only a few days since this man came to me and showed me a letter which he wrote on 22nd October asking for his discharge; also a letter dated November stating the matter would be considered, and that from that date up to now he has had no further notice about the matter.
