Vol. 8 No. 4

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - BILLETING ALLOWANCE.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he has received a claim from Mr. B. Dwyer, late Army No. 37140, of 94 Upper Leeson Street, and if he can state why a soldier living out of barracks does not receive billeting allowance, and why he is stopped 9d. per week for washing and hair-cutting.

No claim appears to have been received at Headquarters from Mr. Dwyer. The usual form has, however, now been sent to him, and on its return, properly completed, the claim will be duly considered. If a soldier elects to live outside barracks when quarters are available he is not entitled to lodging, fuel and light allowance. Where quarters are not available a claim for such allowance would be allowed. It is customary to make deductions from a soldier's pay when not on active service for laundry and hair-cutting. In respect of these services a General Routine Order authorises a stoppage of 9d. a week from the pay of a soldier.
