Vol. 8 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DONEGAL FINANCES.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if a communication has been received by his Department from the clerks employed in the County Council Office of the County Donegal for an enquiry into the administration and finances of the county for the past two or three years; if a similar request has been made by the County Executive of the Farmers' Union and Ratepayers' Association, and if it is intended to have these requests complied with at an early date.

Requests for the holding of enquiries, including one from the clerks referred to, have been received. It has not been shewn that a public enquiry could be held which would justify the cost involved. My Department has been able to give special detailed attention to the administration of the county and to the re-organisation of staff in the County Council Office with good results. A new County Secretary has recently been appointed through the agency of a Civil Service Selection Board.

Arising out of that answer, would not it be a prudent time to set up an inquiry when the newly-appointed Secretary is about to take up his duties?
