Vol. 8 No. 10

COMMITTEE ON FINANCE. - DÁIL RESUMES.

Progress reported. Committee to sit again on Monday.

I beg to move the adjournment of the Dáil.

In regard to the business on Monday, I take it that after certain Bills are dealt with this Estimate will be continued.

Mr. HOGAN

Before the Dáil adjourns, although it is a most unusual request, I understand that a charge was made that I gave a certain guarantee which was broken. I would be ashamed to give a guarantee and to break it, directly or indirectly, either in the spirit or the letter. I would like to know before the Dáil rises what that guarantee was and to have the matter cleared up.

I suppose the Minister is referring to a remark of mine?

Mr. HOGAN

And, I think, Deputy Alton.

The remark was that when this matter came under discussion with the Ministry two years ago the Minister undertook that a final decision should not be come to without inquiring in reference to the different interests concerned or involved, or something in that way.

Mr. HOGAN

I want first of all to assure the Deputy that I do not remember what occurred two years ago. In the second place, no final decision with regard to details, as the Minister for Education made quite clear, has been come to as yet. In the third place, if I said that two years ago I am perfectly certain the Minister for Education will honour what I said.

Can we have a guarantee from the Vice-President that the Army Estimates will not be taken on Monday? There is the Report of the Committee on the Dairy Produce Bill; Seanad amendments to the Railways Bill; Vote 44 not yet concluded, and the conclusion of Vote 5 which was adjourned yesterday. It hardly seems likely that the Army Estimates will be taken, but if they were one wants to bring a certain amount of material. That would be unnecessary if we had an understanding that the Army Estimates would not be taken on Monday.

I give an undertaking that the Army Estimates will not be taken on Monday.

I think we should not abandon both the Army Estimates and the Liquor Bill. If we keep one of them on we would be sure to have a House on Monday.

There is a possibility of the Liquor Bill being taken on Monday.

Question put and agreed to.
The Dáil adjourned at 4.5 p.m. until 3 p.m. Monday, 14th July.
