Vol. 9 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ATHLONE LABOURERS' COTTAGE SCHEME.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that the scheme under the Labourers Acts, undertaken by the Athlone No. 1 Rural District Council, in April, 1914, was to comprise thirty-seven houses, of which fourteen were built and three abandoned, at an average cost of £145, thus leaving twenty houses to be built; that of the loan granted under the Act for the project—viz., £6,290—the amount received was £2,850, thus leaving £3,440 due; whether he will see that the extra money required to meet the increased cost in building, in addition to this £3,440, will be granted to enable the Council to complete their scheme in view of the fact that the Council had purchased all the land required for the erecting of all the houses in 1914, and whether he is now in a position to state when the money will be forthcoming.

The facts are as stated and affirmed in the reply given to a previous question asked by the Deputy on this subject in October, 1922. There are no Government funds now available for operations under the Labourers Acts, but I am prepared to consider an application from the Athlone No. 1 Rural District Council to borrow in the open market such sum as is necessary to complete this unfinished scheme.
