Vol. 9 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SAFEGUARDING BARLEY INDUSTRY.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he has considered the views put before him by a deputation from the barleygrowers of the Saorstát as to the safeguarding of their industry; and if he is prepared to make a statement on the subject.

I have considered the representations made by the deputation referred to in the question. I am about to communicate further with the deputation, but before doing so I would be prepared to discuss the matter with Deputy Conlan or any other Deputy interested, who wishes to see me about it.

Is the Minister aware that the price of barley has fallen considerably within the last month, and that depreciation in price is due to the operations of people who are interested in keeping a restricted market?

I understand the price of barley has fallen just recently, somewhat, and that that is due to a variety of causes, which I would rather discuss with the Deputy.

There is one cause that I am well aware of.

There is more than one cause.
