Vol. 9 No. 23

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - FLAX GROWING IN CO. CORK.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he is aware that the farmers of Carrignavar district, Co. Cork, have guaranteed to grow two hundred acres of flax next season and have also guaranteed to erect a scutch mill; and, if so, whether he will see that those farmers are provided with the services of a competent flax instructor to enable them to develop this important industry in that district.

replying: The Department of Agriculture, through one of their flax instructors, have been in touch with farmers in the Carrignavar district, County Cork, who propose to grow flax next season. I have not, however, been informed that these prospective growers are prepared to erect a scutch mill for the treatment of their flax crops. The question of affording special instruction in the growing and handling of the flax crop to farmers in the district in question will receive the Department's careful consideration.
