Vol. 10 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ALLEGED BREACHES OF LAW BY MOTOR DRIVERS.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware of the danger to the travelling public caused by driving at excessive speed and the non-observance of the rule of the road by some drivers of tenders and motor cars on the Droichead Nua-Dublin trunk road; whether he is aware that many of those cars carry no tail lights for number identification purposes, and that many private lorries are not equipped with reflecting mirrors, and whether he will take immediate action to ensure the observance of the law by motor drivers on that road.

During the past twelve months there have been 116 prosecutions for various breaches of the Motor Car Acts detected by the Gárda on the Droichead Nua-Dublin road. These included 42 prosecutions against offenders who had no tail light; seven against drivers of lorries which had no reflecting mirrors, and three for reckless driving.

The Gárdaí have been doing their best to stop careless and reckless driving on this road, and the Deputy may be assured that they will not relax their efforts to deal with these offences in future.
