Vol. 10 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMPENSATION FOR DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AND PERSONAL INJURIES.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what sums have been paid to date, whether as the consequence of decrees or ex gratia grants, under the heads, respectively, of Damage to Property, and Personal Injury; and if any estimates have been made of moneys that may yet remain to be paid under these heads, and what these estimates are; and if any other moneys are due to be paid, or are estimated to be paid, as a consequence of Irregular activities, and what the amount of these moneys are, or may be.

The amount paid up to and including the 7th instant in respect of compensation for property losses is £6,838,000 cash, while £437,000 has been paid in stock. In respect of personal injuries payment has been made to the 7th instant of just over £701,000. While personal injury cases have to a large extent been disposed of, a large number of property cases still await hearing in Court, and it is accordingly not possible to estimate what moneys yet remain to be paid. Government property has also suffered extensive damage, of which no account is taken in the foregoing figures, while a number of mixed cases of commandeering and damage are dealt with through the Public Works and Buildings Vote, which are also excluded from the figures given above.

The latter part of the question is not fully understood. If the Deputy means that items such as the increased cost of the Army, consequent on Irregular activities, are to be taken into account the figure of the total payments would be much enlarged, but for obvious reasons is not capable of measurement at the moment.
