asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether a claim has been received from Mr. John J. Clarke, Gore Street, Ballina, for payment of an account of £191 0s. 0d. in respect of cartage done by him for National troops in December, 1922, the accounts having been certified by Captains Hanley and Bannon; and if he will have instructions issued for payment of the amount.

Mr. Clarke's claim was received in the Department of Defence in December last. It needs local investigation. An officer of the Department is presently visiting Ballina and will call on Mr. Clarke. Settlement of the claim will be expedited as much as possible.
