Vol. 10 No. 22

DÁIL SUPREME COURT (PENSIONS) BILL, 1925—FIFTH STAGE.

I move "That the Dáil Supreme Court (Pensions) Bill, 1925, do now pass."

I was so successful on the last occasion in calling forth a very eloquent speech from one of the new Deputies I think it well that his colleagues at least should have an opportunity to explain themselves in regard to this Bill. Perhaps, in view of their absence during the earlier discussions, it would be desirable to explain that this is a Bill to authorise the payment of pensions to middle-aged barristers who served for less than two years as judges in the Dáil Courts, and to pay them pensions amounting to two-thirds of their salaries, or £500 a year for life, for that two years' service. It is said in regard to one of them that he does not recognise the authority of this assembly to legislate or pay any public monies to anybody. That, however, is, perhaps, beside the question. It is well, I think, that Deputies who have not made themselves acquainted with the provisions, purport, and intentions of this Bill, should understand it, and if I succeed in persuading other Deputies, or even the same Deputy, to express himself on this Bill before he votes I shall be quite delighted.
