Vol. 12 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS ORAL ANSWERS. - CLAIM FOR MILITARY OCCUPATION OF TIPPERARY WORKHOUSE.

asked the Minister for Finance whether a sum of £6,286 15s. 11d. is due by the Saorstát Government to the ratepayers of the Tipperary Union district; whether nearly £4,000 of this sum is money paid over to the Saorstát Government by the British Government for the occupation of the workhouse by British military during the European War; and whether the balance is for the occupation of the workhouse by the National Army in the period 1923-5, and whether there is, in addition, a reinstatement award of £1,800 for damage done to the workhouse premises during the military occupation; whether these sums of £6,286 15s. 11d. and £1,800 will be earmarked for the credit of the Tipperary Union district ratepayers either in reduction of current rates or of capital charges.

No sum whatever has yet been paid over to the Saorstát Government by the British Government in respect of the occupation of the Tipperary Workhouse by British military, and no such sum as that referred to in the Deputy's question can therefore be said to be due by the Saorstát to the ratepayers of the Union District.

A claim in respect of the occupation by British military has, however, been investigated and an award thereon may be expected at an early date from the Compensation (Ireland) Commission, and there is also under consideration at the present time a claim in respect of the occupation of the premises by the National Army. No such reinstatement award as that mentioned in the latter part of the question has been made.
