Vol. 12 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CORK COMPENSATION (PERSONAL INJURIES) CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Defence whether the claim in the case of Michael Hickey, who was shot dead in Cork on March 10th, 1923, came before the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee; whether the amount awarded to this man's dependents, who consist of a wife and four children, was the sum of £100, and whether, as this sum is considered inadequate, he will reconsider the case with a view to increasing the amount of compensation.

I understand that a claim made by John Hickey, the father of Michael Hickey, in respect of his own loss in the death of his son, came before the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee, who found that it was outside their terms of reference. A similar claim had at the time been dealt with by my Department, and an ex-gratia payment of £100 had been made to Mr. John Hickey. There was no information that the deceased had left a wife and four children. In one of the claims he is described as having been single, and twenty-three years of age.

I regret that I am unable to increase the grant made in the case.
