There are 45 points, and the hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Eighty men are wholly employed on traffic control. Without increasing the number so employed it is impossible to cover additional points for a longer period, and it is not possible with the present strength of the police in the Metropolis to employ any additional number of men. A Gárda cannot be expected to do a longer turn than eight hours on duty of that kind.
I would like to ask the Minister whether he has made himself thoroughly aware of the facts regarding the attendance at point duty in O'Connell Street, O'Connell Bridge, and various places round about there after six o'clock. I think if he makes inquiries he will find that it is not correct to say that these attendances are carried on up to 7 o'clock.
