Vol. 13 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EMPLOYMENT OF ALIENS IN SAORSTAT.

DOMHNALL O MUIRGHEASA

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether aliens are allowed to enter the Saorstát for the purpose of employment without permission, if permits are requisite, what conditions must be complied with before issue; and if he will state how many permits have been granted to aliens from Germany since August 1st, 1925.

In accordance with the terms of the Aliens Order, 1925, leave is not given to an alien to enter Saorstát Eireann for the purpose of employment unless the Minister for Industry and Commerce permits the prospective employer to employ him; before a permit is issued the Minister considers whether suitable citizens of Saorstát Eireann are available to perform the work for which the alien is required. The number of aliens from Germany in respect of whom permits have been granted since August 1st, 1925, is 174.

Has the Minister any information to give as to the occupations of these various German residents or citizens?

There were German governesses—at least there was one —and there were the people required on the housing scheme at Marino and the Shannon scheme.

Will the Minister say how many dockers and how many navvies and how many engineers were amongst those who came into the country?

I could not say for certain. I should say there were no dockers.

They did not become dockers until they arrived here.
