Vol. 13 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - KILKENNY ROADS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received a resolution from the Kilkenny County Council asking for a grant to improve the roads of that county, which are in a very poor condition, and whether, in view of the fact that great distress prevails amongst the workers there, occasioned by unemployment, he will undertake to expedite matters by way of grant and thereby check the present deplorable condition in which hundreds of willing workers now find themselves.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As soon as particulars asked from the County Council on the 17th instant are supplied, the question of making a recommendation to the Minister for Finance will be considered. I do not know at the moment how far it will be possible to obtain an allocation for Kilkenny, as I understand that the balance in the hands of the Minister for Finance out of the Relief Grants Vote is extremely small. I may add that grants of £14,175 and £27,400 have already been made to the County Council this year and last year respectively out of the Road Fund.

Arising out of that question, is the Minister aware how money was squandered on the streets of Kilkenny recently and whether material was spread on the streets and had to be swept up again and put into the muck heap?

That is a question for the local Council.

Has no report on the matter been sent to the Minister?
