Vol. 13 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - UNANSWERED CORRESPONDENCE.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that letters were sent to his Department by the Civil Service Clerical Association as follows:—On May 16th, 1925, dealing with the hours of duty of typists in the Department of Posts and Telegraphs; on July 1st, 1925, dealing with the promotion of Writing Assistants; on July 24th, 1925, dealing with special leave to Writing Assistants in the National Health Insurance Commission; and on July 24th, 1925, dealing with Supervising Typists in the Revenue Commissioners' Department; whether he is aware that in spite of repeated further letters in each case, the Association has not yet received answers to the representations made in these letters; and if he will state what action he proposes to take in order to avoid occasion for discontent among civil servants by ensuring prompt replies to representations made on their behalf.

The communications mentioned, each of which was duly acknowledged on receipt, refer to matters affecting staff employed in a number of different Departments, and three of them involve the consideration of issues concerning classes which are common to the whole Civil Service. It will be understood that questions of this kind can only be dealt with after consideration of the effect that any suggested modification in existing conditions in the case of one Department might produce in all the Departments concerned. Each Department has to be consulted, and a considerable time must consequently elapse before it is possible to communicate a decision. The Association was last month informed of the action taken in regard to Superintendents of Typists. The questions raised in the letters on other subjects have not been overlooked, and it is hoped that a reply to each will be issued at an early date.
