Vol. 14 No. 3

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - EX-R.I.C. MAN'S PENSION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Finance whether ex-Constable Edward T. Wilson, R.I.C., in reply to a letter from his Department, dated the 20th July, 1925, gave the names of two gentlemen from County Westmeath who would be able to corroborate his statement as to his national sympathies in 1917, and whether those gentlemen were written to for corroboration; whether he is aware that Mr. Wilson holds he is properly entitled to a pension under Section 5 of the Superannuation and Pensions Act, 1923.

Mr. Wilson failed to satisfy the Committee of Inquiry into Resignations and Dismissals from the Royal Irish Constabulary, which investigated his case very fully, that his resignation from that Force in May, 1917, was caused by his national sympathies. After careful review of all the facts and circumstances of the case as presented to the Committee of Inquiry and of the evidence since submitted by Mr. Wilson, I can see no reason for disagreeing with the unfavourable view formed by the Committee, and I am accordingly unable to authorise the grant to him of a pension under Section 5 of the Superannuations and Pensions Act, 1923.
