Vol. 16 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DOUBLE INCOME TAX REGULATIONS.

asked the President if his attention has been drawn to the publication in the daily papers of 29th June, 1926, of a statement made by Mr. H.S. Harrington, Chairman of the Killarney Regatta Committee, to the effect that a recent ruling of the Revenue Commissioners with regard to Income Tax made it impossible for him to continue his all-the-year-round residence in Saorstát Eireann, due to the system by which he was compelled to pay double income tax, not alone on what he earned, but on the whole of his American income, whether he brought it to the Saorstát or not; and if he will state whether any arrangements are being made to overcome this grievance.

The Revenue Commissioners are making inquiries into this matter, and I will communicate with the Deputy at a later date.

Would the Minister also communicate with the person concerned in order to prevent him, and others like him, leaving the country?

I will see what the facts of the situation are.

Would the Minister consider the advisability of entering into negotiations with other countries with a view to arriving at an understanding similar to that arrived at with the British Government?

No. I do not think it is desirable to enter into any further arrangements for the relief of double taxation. Certain attention has been given to that matter, and the general view is that probably it would be to our disadvantage rather than our advantage.
