Vol. 16 No. 21

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DESTRUCTION OF CAVAN HOUSE.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state when payment will be made to Rev. Arthur T. Whyte, Venables, in respect of the award of the Compensation (Ireland) Commission in his favour for £5,796 and £111 14s. Od. costs and expenses in respect of malicious destruction of Redhills House, County Cavan, and the contents thereof on the 28th June, 1921.

The specific case mentioned by the Deputy is one of those in which the damage occurred within a short distance of the Border and compensation was levied on three counties, two of which are in the Saorstát and one in Northern Ireland. The general question of the action to be taken in cases of this nature is still the subject of negotiations with the British Government, and until a decision has been reached no payment can be made by the Saorstát.

Is the Minister aware that I got the same answer exactly two years ago that he has given now to this question, and is he also aware that Lord Lanesborough, who had the same sort of award made, has had payment made to him?

My answer to the first part of the supplementary question is "yes." As regards the second part of the supplementary question, I have no knowledge.
