Vol. 17 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ROAD SCHEME OPERATIONS (OFFALY).

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he can state the amount allocated to the County of Offaly under the National Trunk Road Scheme, and the date the Commissioner was advised of its allocation; if and when the work under the scheme was started, how many men are employed on same, and how much of the amount allocated has already been paid out by the Commissioner, also if he can state the date the Commissioner was advised of the grant of £9,630 for the repair of the Tullamore-Clara road, when the work commenced, how many men are employed, and the total amount already paid out by the Commissioner.

The amount allocated to Offaly County under the first section of the National Road Scheme is £13,203. The allocation was notified to the Commissioner by letter of the 27th July last, the date upon which all county councils were notified. Portion of the work was commenced on the 16th of August last, and the number of men employed thereon is 103. The sum paid by the Commissioner up to last pay day was £2,231. It is now approximately £2,500.

The grant of £9,630 was notified to the Commissioner by letter of the 24th September last. Work commenced on the 22nd ultimo. The number of men employed is 14. No pay day has intervened since the work began. These schemes were delayed partly owing to negotiations as to acquisition of land, the appointment of a clerk of works, and chiefly owing to the unsuitability of the specification and estimates submitted by the county surveyor.

Would the Minister send a copy of that answer to the Minister for Industry and Commerce?

He already knows it.
