Vol. 17 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - REGISTRATION OF SS. DEANSGATE.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the ss. "Deansgate" is registered in the Saorstát, and, if so, if he will state the date of registration.

The registry of the s.s. "Deansgate" was transferred from the port of Newcastle-on-Tyne to Dublin on the 27th April, 1926.

Arising out of the Minister's answer, may I point out that last week the Minister refused to pay unemployment benefit to the crew of this vessel on the ground that it was registered in England, whereas it now transpires that it was registered in the Saorstát?

Yes, at a date later than we thought, so that makes the men's case worse.

In McLaughlin's case?

He made a claim in July for benefit that would be built up when?

At the time that the boat was registered in the Free State.

From the time that the contributions would run? Was it while the boat was registered in the Free State or not?

We cannot have a Minister asking questions.

If, as the Minister says, the boat was registered in April, and the man was in continuous employment until July, would he not be entitled then?

The claim would arise.

Why was the claim refused?

I am not sure that it has been refused.
