Vol. 18 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - MOUNTJOY PRISON WARDER'S DISCHARGE.

asked the Minister for Justice whether Mr. M. McMahon, late temporary warder at Mountjoy Prison, was discharged from the prison service by reason of his age, and, if so, whether the Minister will state why he was originally accepted as a warder if he was unable to comply with the requirements of the prison authorities in regard to age, and, if not, what were the reasons for his discharge; if the Minister is aware that before entering the service Mr. McMahon furnished the authorities at Mountjoy with a certificate of age; and further, whether there are any other temporary warders still employed whose ages exceed that of Mr. McMahon.

Mr. McMahon, when applying for the post of temporary warder, stated that his date of birth was September, 1895. He did not furnish the authorities at Mountjoy Prison with a certificate of birth before entering the service, nor was he required to do so. Subsequent to his appointment it was ascertained that he had under-stated his age by five years, and as his explanation was most unsatisfactory he was discharged from the service.
