Vol. 19 No. 5

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CLARE COAST EROSION.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is prepared to take any steps to prevent coast erosion in County Clare, so as to safeguard public roads, etc., from the encroachment of the sea.

My Department is not empowered to undertake the construction of sea defence works nor has it at its disposal funds which could be advanced by way of grant or loan in aid of such works. Where injury is caused by parties removing sand or shingle from the seashore the Department has power under the Harbours Act, 1814, to prohibit such removals under penalty. An order of this nature recently made in respect of the shore at Kilkee has had good results.

Mr. HOGAN

Has the Minister had any communication from the Clare County Council with reference to the sea undermining the sea-wall and road outside Kilrush?

That possibly has come in, but I am not aware of it.
