Vol. 21 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SHANNON SCHEME—FATAL ACCIDENTS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of fatal accidents which occurred in connection with the Shannon Scheme since its inception; the number resulting in complete incapacity; and if he is in a position to indicate what compensation has been given either to the dependents or the sufferers themselves.

The number of fatal accidents on the Shannon Works in the two years since its inception amounts to 12; 39 accidents have been reported as resulting in greater or less incapacity. The statutory returns do not enable me to say which of these resulted in total incapacity. The payment of compensation is, under the Workmen's Compensation Acts, a matter between employer and employee, of which particulars do not come before me. No complaints, however, have been received of any failure to pay compensation to Shannon workers.

Mr. HOGAN

If complaints were made to the Minister would he indicate what action he would take to facilitate payments towards persons injured?

That would depend on the complaint. If it were an absurd complaint it would be turned down.

Mr. HOGAN

I have a recollection of having submitted a case to the Minister and he said it was a matter between the employer and the employee——

And I say the same now.

Mr. HOGAN

But the person injured was not in a position to proceed against the employer.

I would like to have further particulars of that special case if the Deputy will give them.

Mr. HOGAN

I will give them to the Minister.
