Vol. 21 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - IMPORT AND EXPORT PROHIBITIONS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the report that the League of Nations Economic Committee has prepared a draft agreement for the abolition of import and export prohibitions and restrictions, and that Article One of the draft agreement provides, subject to certain exceptions, that the contracting States shall undertake within a period of six months to abolish all import and export prohibitions or restrictions; whether the Minister will instruct the representatives of the Irish Free State to oppose any agreement that might prevent the Oireachtas from imposing any restrictions or prohibitions on imports that the Oireachtas may consider desirable in the interests of the community.

The representatives of this country at the conference have been instructed not to agree to any convention for the abolition of import and export prohibitions and restrictions and to state that Saorstát Eireann reserves its decision in regard to any such convention, if arrived at, pending consideration of the terms of the convention and of the position of other countries represented at the conference.
