Vol. 21 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - UNEMPLOYED PERSONS IN DUBLIN.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of unemployed persons registering at the Dublin Labour Exchange and the Dublin Corporation Labour Bureau during the week ending 29th October, 1927; if he will see that those who fail to secure temporary employment will be provided with other means to maintain themselves and their dependents.

The statistical week nearest to the date specified in the question ended on the 31st October, 1927, and on that date the number of persons registered as unemployed at the Dublin Employment Exchange was 7,885.

The Labour Bureau of the Dublin Corporation is not under my control and does not render any statistical information to my Department and consequently I am not in a position to state the number of persons registered there.

The provision already made by the Government as well as that contemplated, for the relief of unemployment, has been announced in the course of the recent debate and I have nothing to add to the information then given.

Will the Minister say that each individual of the 7,885 will get a fair share of the work as a result of the grant which it is proposed to give for relief work?

We will rely on the Deputy to see that Dublin gets its fair share.

Mr. BYRNE

Will the total relief grant give every man who is idle in Dublin a month's work?

It is not worth arguing about.

There can be very little calculation made as to number of men idle in Dublin from the very specific points I have stated in answer to the Deputy's question.
