Vol. 21 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TUBERCULOSIS IN COWS.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture how many cows recently shipped from Dublin Port were slaughtered at port of landing in England under the Tuberculosis Order, and how many were stated to have been affected with tuberculosis of the udder.

Since 1st September last twenty cows shipped from Dublin are reported to have been rejected in accordance with the requirements of the (British) Tuberculosis Order of 1925 at Birkenhead Port as suffering from indurated udder. (Prior to that date very few Irish animals were forbidden to land in Great Britain through this cause.) All of these animals were slaughtered on board ship and subsequently landed and, it is understood, disposed of to butchers. According to the report of the British Veterinary Service, the post-mortem examinations revealed tuberculosis of the udder in nine of the cases in question. The matter is receiving the Department's careful attention.
