Vol. 21 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - GALWAY HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that in 1913 the Development Commissioners agreed to grant a sum of £61,000 (estimated by Sir J.P. Griffith) for the deepening of the Channel between Dun Aengus Dock and the roadsteads in Galway Harbour, but that owing to the war nothing has since been done, and whether, in view of the serious condition of the large numbers of unemployed in Galway, he will consider the advisability of having this useful national work proceeded with without delay.

I am aware that Sir John Griffith estimated that the scheme mentioned by the Deputy would cost £61,000, but the records at my disposal contain nothing to justify the statement that the Development Commissioners decided to make a grant for the purpose. In the absence of details of the scheme, I cannot say whether any proposal for a grant from public funds would be likely to receive favourable consideration at the present time. Any representations which it is desired to make on the subject should be addressed to the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
