Vol. 21 No. 18

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - BALLYTORE (CO. KILDARE) FLOODS.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the periodic flooding of some of the dwelling houses and adjoining lands in Ballytore, Co. Kildare, by the overflowing of the River Griese, a tributary of the Barrow, and whether he will give instructions to have the necessary drainage works in conjunction with the Barrow scheme carried out immediately, thereby giving much-needed employment.

Mr. BOURKE

It is not proposed to carry out any drainage works on the Griese River under the Barrow Drainage Scheme.

The Commissioners of Public Works have, however, received a petition under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1925, in respect of the drainage of this river, consideration of which was postponed for a time pending developments in connection with the Barrow Scheme. As it has now been decided not to include the Griese River in the Barrow Scheme the investigation of the proposal as an independent scheme under the Act of 1925 is proceeding. Reports on it have been made by an engineer and a valuer and are under consideration, but it is not yet possible to say whether, or when, the proposed scheme of drainage work can be carried out.
