Vol. 22 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE BENEFITS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health what steps he intends to take to ensure that citizens of the Saorstát, such as those employed in Belleek Potteries and the factories in Derry, who are at present paying towards National Health Insurance, shall be entitled to benefits under the scheme.

Under Part III. of the National Health Insurance (Irish Free State Reciprocal Arrangements) Order, 1924, a person who is resident in Saorstát Eireann and employed in Northern Ireland is treated as insurable in Saorstát Eireann by reason of employment in Northern Ireland. The stamped cards surrendered will bear Northern Ireland stamps, but the society will get credit for the contributions and must treat the person in all respects as if having been employed in Saorstát Eireann. The person is entitled to the normal benefits of insurance under the Insurance Acts as they apply to Saorstát Eireann, subject to the usual qualifying conditions being fulfilled.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, will he say if there is any reciprocal arrangement between the two Governments in respect to Unemployment Insurance?

That is a separate question, of which the Deputy must give notice.
