Vol. 22 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DAMAGE TO PROPERTY AWARDS (A COUNTY LONGFORD CASE).

asked the Minister for Finance what was the total amount awarded and paid in respect of the destruction of the house on the MeKay Wilson Estate, Currygrane, Co. Longford, under the Damage to Property (Compensation) Acts; how much of this was awarded for reconstruction in the Saorstát; and how much has been spent up to the present in accordance with the reconstruction award in this case.

A sum of £16,426, of which £12,000 was subject to a partial reinstatement condition, was awarded under the Damage to Property (Compensation) Act, 1923, by way of compensation in respect of the destruction of Currygrane House and its contents. In addition, £245 9s. 7d. was awarded as costs and expenses. A scheme submitted on the applicant's behalf under Section 10 (1) (ii.) of the Act to expend the conditional portion of the decree on the erection of houses in Sandycove, Co. Dublin, was approved by the Circuit Court. Not less than £12,000 has been expended in accordance with the amended reinstatement condition, and the full amount awarded together with the addition of 10 per cent. for which provision is made in the Damage to Property (Compensation) (Amendment) Act, 1926, has accordingly been paid. I may add. for the Deputy's information, that the liability of the Exchequer to the extent of £4,000 in respect of this award was discharged by the issue of 5 per cent. Compensation Stock instead of cash.

Might I ask the Minister what progress has been made with reconstruction in Sandycove?

It has been completed.

Might I ask the Minister if it is a fact that the moneys awarded to James McKay Wilson have been taken out of the country?

No. I told the Deputy that not less than £12,000 has been expended in the erection of buildings in Sandycove, Co. Dublin.
