Vol. 22 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ECONOMIES IN PUBLIC EXPENDITURE.

asked the Minister for Finance what progress has been made by the Departmental Committee set up for the purpose of inquiring into and making recommendations for effecting economies in public expenditure; the number of meetings that have been held since the last General Election; and if he can say when this Committee is likely to furnish a report.

I understand that the Committee on Economy in Government Expenditure has made substantial progress, and that it is now engaged on an examination in detail of expenditure on the various Votes. Seventeen meetings have been held since the last General Election. Owing to the wide ground to be covered by its investigations it is hardly likely that it will be possible for the Committee to furnish a report before the end of June next.
