Vol. 22 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SEPTUAGENARIANS IN FREE STATE.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of persons in Saorstát Eireann who had attained the age of seventy years on 18th April, 1926, and the number of persons who had attained the age of sixty-five, but had not attained the age of seventy on the same date.

I will give the figures required in this particular instance, but I hope that Deputies in future will not press me to give isolated figures obtained from the Census of Population or the Census of Production before the results of each Census can be published in their appropriate volume with all the related information connected with the same subject matter. Such a procedure would militate against a comprehensive view of the results of each Census, and, by causing the Statistics Branch to interrupt its carefully-considered programme of work for the purpose of compiling, out of proper order, figures required only to answer questions in the Dáil must delay the publication of those results.

The figures are:—

Persons over 70

170,468

Persons between 65 and 70

101,212

Will the Minister state when he expects that the full report will be published?

I cannot say. Certain volumes are at the moment with the Stationery Office. I think that two volumes are actually with them awaiting publication, and the others will follow at intervals.
