Vol. 22 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - FLOODING OF CAMLIN RIVER.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that considerable damage is being done to land by the flooding of the lower portion of Camlin river; that this is caused by the mismanagement of the sluice gates of the Shannon at Clondra, Co. Longford, and if he will order that the summer level, which is sufficient for water traffic, be maintained during the wet season.

Mr. BOURKE

It is incorrect to state that the flooding on the lower portion of the Camlin river is caused by the mismanagement of the sluice gates on the Shannon at Clondra, Co. Longford.

In regulating the level of the Shannon, due regard is always paid to the interests of drainage as well as those of navigation. Everything practicable is done to avoid flooding, but it is not always possible to prevent it or to keep the river down to the navigation level in winter.
