Vol. 22 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMPENSATION CLAIM FOR SEIZURE OF MOTOR CAR.

asked the Minister for Defence whether a motor car, the property of John Sullivan, late of Dromod, Waterville, County Kerry, which was seized by Black and Tans on December 13th, 1920, and retained until the end of 1921, was taken without compensation by the Forces of the Provisional Government in September, 1922, and has not been restored to the owner; if he will state why no compensation has been paid to Mr. Sullivan for the seizure of his car, and if he will undertake to have the matter considered with a view to the payment of compensation.

A claim was received from Mr. J. Sullivan, Dromod West, Waterville, in respect of a Ford motor car which was commandeered by the National Forces during the course of a raid on the premises of his uncle, Mr. M. O'Sullivan, on the 9th November, 1922. Compensation was refused because of the fact that the claimant had been in armed opposition to the State. In the circumstances, I do not see any reason why this case should be re-opened.
