With regard to this section and the next one I have received a representation from the Minister stating that, in accordance with the agreement arrived at, Sections 2 and 3 must go out. I will, however, formally move them and they can be negatived.
PRIVATE DEPUTIES' BUSINESS. - INCREASE OF RENT AND MORTGAGE INTEREST (RESTRICTIONS) BILL, 1928—THIRD STAGE.

SECTION 2.
Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained therein the Act of 1923 and the Act of 1926 shall, subject to the amendments made therein by this Act, continue in force until the 24th day of June, 1934, and shall then expire.
Question—"That Section 2 stand part of the Bill"—put and negatived.
SECTION 3.
The expression "this Act" wherever it occurs in the Act of 1923 (including any clause inserted therein by virtue of the Act of 1926 or of this present Act) shall from and after the passing of this present Act be construed as meaning the Act of 1923 as amended by this present Act, and the Act of 1923 shall have effect accordingly.
I move:—
"That Section 3 stand part of the Bill."

SECTION 4.
Section 4 of the Act of 1926 shall be construed and have effect as if clause (b) of the paragraph thereby inserted in the Act of 1923 were amended by the substitution of the year 1934 for the year 1928 and as if clause (c) of the said paragraph were deleted.

"That Section 4 stand part of the Bill."
I move:—
"In line 41, to delete the figures ‘1934' and substitute therefor the figures ‘1929.‘"
The effect of that amendment will be that the rents of all houses which are now protected will continue to be protected until June, 1929. That was the suggestion made on Second Reading, and I think it met with the approbation and consent of the House.
