Vol. 23 No. 13

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ARREARS OF INCOME TAX.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state the actual amount of arrears of income tax, under all heads, outstanding up to April 1st, 1928, including those arrears considered non-collectable.

The total arrears up to and including 1927-28 cannot be stated until particulars of discharges have been received from Inspectors of Taxes throughout the country. These statistics will not be available for several months. The arrears of income tax not disposed of by payment or discharge for years up to 1926-27 inclusive are estimated at £1,400,000. It is considered that considerable further discharges, e.g., double taxation relief, etc., will fall to be made, and that certain further sums will be found to be uncollectable. It is estimated accordingly that the actual amount which will ultimately be collected will be round about £500,000.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state the total amount of arrears of income tax assessed for collection to the British Exchequer, but actually collected into the Free State Exchequer, for the financial year 1923-24.

The income tax collected in the financial year 1923-24 included about £1,411,000 in respect of assessments made prior to 1st April, 1922.

The bulk of the tax assessed prior to 1st April, 1922, i.e., in respect of 1921-22 and previous years should, in normal circumstances, have reached the British Exchequer before the 31st March, 1922, but a certain amount (2nd instalment, 1921-22) was not payable until 1st July, 1922, when it would have been due for payment into the Saorstát Exchequer.
