Vol. 25 No. 5

(CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS). (ORAL ANSWERS). - A KERRY LIME KILN.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he is aware that a lime kiln, capable of burning fifty barrels of lime daily, had been built by the landlord of the Mahony estate at Blackwater, Co. Kerry, and worked for many years to the great advantage of the tenantry of that estate; that it was purchased about sixteen years ago by the Congested Districts Board, and has since been idle; and whether, in view of the fact that this kiln is built near a deep-water pier, and that there is abundance of limestone to be had in the neighbouring islands, the Minister will take steps to have this kiln worked again, so as to secure to the tenants mentioned the advantages they enjoyed, in respect of lime, before the estate was purchased.

The late Congested Districts Board purchased the lime kiln at Blackwater on 26th May, 1915, but were unable to make any arrangements for the working of it. They also purchased a limestone island in the Kenmare River for the purpose of supplying limestone and lime, but the project has not been in any way developed for the reason stated above. The possibility of using the lime kiln is at present being investigated.
