Vol. 25 No. 7

PRIVATE BUSINESS. - THE ADJOURNMENT.

On the adjournment Deputy Gorry will raise the matter he mentioned yesterday in connection with the Barrow Drainage.

What time is to be given to Deputy Gorry? Is it an hour or half an hour? It was not clearly explained yesterday.

I take it, from our experience, that an hour is necessary in order to give certain Deputies an opportunity of making a statement. Does the President agree with that?

I see no objection if the business that is to be dealt with is disposed of at that time. I intend to move that the House stand adjourned until 10th October. In the event of some Bills being amended by the Seanad, it may be necessary to meet within the next three weeks, possibly within a fortnight, but the business to be discharged will be simply to consider the amendments from the Seanad.

As the adjournment is to be moved until 10th October, with regard to the necessity of meeting one day if necessary to transact business from the Seanad is that date being fixed now, or is it being left to be fixed under Standing Order 16?

Under Standing Order 16.

If no meeting is necessary, Deputies will be acquainted accordingly, and if a meeting is necessary they will get at least three days' notice.

Could the President indicate roughly, the date of the next meeting?

I should say that Bills going to the Seanad now will arrive there on Tuesday next, and, allowing for the utmost possible expedition, they would not pass through their final stages in the Seanad until Thursday, it might be on the Wednesday following. If they passed on Thursday, it is quite possible we might meet on the following Thursday, the 2nd August. If not passed until Wednesday week it might be that we will have to wait another week.

We may take it that it will be between the 2nd and the 9th August?

Yes, Deputies will have a guide by the way the business is disposed of by the Seanad.

Will the President state if he included in the business on the Order Paper for to-day items 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12?

I should hope so, but I am not making it a condition.

With regard to meeting for the transaction of Seanad business, it might be possible on next Friday to let Deputies know. It depends on the Seanad and the way they transact the business. No meeting at all may be necessary.
