Vol. 26 No. 4

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - THE HOMESPUN INDUSTRY IN TIRCONAILL.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he will state what results have been achieved by the inspector appointed to organise the homespun industry in Tirconaill.

I refer the Deputy to the first portion of my reply to Deputy McFadden.

I put down a question asking the Minister to state what results have been achieved by the inspector appointed to organise the homespun industry in Tirconaill. The Minister has not answered that question. Does the Minister recollect that in February last he went around interviewing people in Ardara along with this inspector. The people of Ardara were asked how much they were prepared to pay towards the restarting of the homespun industry. They offered to bear half the cost. They also offered to put up a turbine costing £500.

This is a recital and not a question.

I am going merely to ask a question. What we want to know is, what the inspector has done since he was appointed last year?

As a result of his investigation of the situation, certain definite proposals, as I have already said in reply to Deputy MacFadden, are coming before this Gaeltacht Economic Committee on Monday next, the result of which we hope will be that the inspector will before the end of the month be in Ardara getting out new designs and patterns. Following that there will be the presenting of the designs to the trade with a view to getting the industry re-established.
