CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TEACHING OF INFANTS IN IRISH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

asked the Minister for Education whether he will state (1) the number of national schools in the Free State where teaching instruction in the infants' division is given wholly through the medium of the Irish language; (2) the number of national schools where instruction in the infants' division is partly in Irish and partly in English; and (3) the number of national schools where the instruction in the infants' division is altogether in English.

There are: (1) 1,240 schools in which, apart from the teaching of English as a subject, the teaching instruction in the infants' division is given wholly through the medium of Irish; (2) 3,570 schools in which, on the same basis, the teaching instruction in the infants' division is given partly through the medium of Irish and partly through the medium of English; (3) 373 schools in which, apart from the teaching of Irish as a subject, the teaching instruction in the infants' division is given wholly through the medium of English.
