Vol. 27 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ERECTION OF A BRIDGE IN MAYO.

asked the Minister for Lands and Fisheries whether he is aware that in 1923 the people of Shramore, Newport, Mayo, were informed by the Chief Engineer of the Land Commission for that district that £900 had been allocated for the construction of a road, a bridge, and for the cleaning of the Shramore river, and whether he will state when the construction of this much-needed bridge will be proceeded with, and what is the cause of the present delay.

No such statement as that mentioned in the question was made, but out of the Special Relief Vote moneys were expended on improvement of roads at Shramore. The property is the subject of proceedings before the Land Commission under the Land Act, 1923, and the question of the construction of a bridge will be duly considered.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that 33 persons have land beyond this river, and that a large number of cattle and sheep have continually to be driven across during a couple of seasons of the year, and is he aware of the extreme necessity that exists for such a bridge? Certainly the people of the locality claim they were promised a bridge by the engineer some few years ago.

There was no such promise made. It is not work which could be undertaken under the Relief Scheme Vote. This matter will be considered when we are dealing with the estate.
