Vol. 27 No. 4

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CASTLEBAR AFFORESTATION SCHEME.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state why the proposed afforestation scheme on the lands of Bernard Dooher, Glanisland, Castlebar, has not been proceeded with; and whether, after giving due consideration to the unemployment which exists in the locality, he will put this scheme into operation without further delay.

I assume that the land referred to is an area of 326 acres at Drumilra, Newport, Co. Mayo, held in common by Mr. Dooher and four others. This land has not been acquired by the Department, and no State afforestation work has, therefore, been undertaken in connection with it. From the information at the Department's disposal, and in view of its limited size, the area does not appear likely to prove suitable for planting purposes, but an inspection by an officer of the Forestry Division will be made at a suitable opportunity.
